Troubleshooting Help/FAQ

Q: When I click the “Play Video” link, a new window opens but it only displays a broken icon.
A: You must have Quicktime 6.2 or newer. Try downloading and reinstalling Quicktime. You will have to restart your browser after installation.

If the problem persists, please drop us a note, including the video title you are trying to watch. Although the possibilities are small, the video file you are trying to access may be corrupt. We will check the asset and get back to you.

Q: When I click the “Play Video” link, a new window opens but no video plays.
A: There is a known issue with the most PC firewall software including the Windows XP built-in firewall that prevents videos from playing to the desktop.

On-Campus Office Users:
If you are using any firewall software, including the Windows XP built-in firewall, and experience difficulty viewing videos you should contact the ITS Help Desk at 419-372-0999.

Residence Hall Users:
If you are using any firewall software, including the Windows XP built-in firewall, and experience difficulty viewing videos you should contact the RCC at 419-372-8077.

Off-Campus Users:
If you are using any firewall software, including the Windows XP built-in firewall, and experience difficulty viewing videos, you should turn off your firewall while watching. To protect your system, it is in your best interest to turn your firewall back on when finished viewing.

Q: I scheduled a video to view and control from my on-campus PC, but I can’t control the video.
A: Java is required to control assets from your desktop. Check your browser preferences and make sure Java is enabled.

Q: I’m viewing off-campus. When I click the “Play Video” link, a window opens and the audio starts playing and sometimes a picture from the video appears, but it won’t play correctly.
A: You must be using a Cable or DSL modem with a connection speed of 500kb/s or better to stream videos to your off-campus PC. Dial up connections are not supported.

If you are using a Cable or DSL, you should check the speed of your connection. Visit the website http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/. Perform the free speed test by selecting your type of connection and your location. Make note of the results.

After running the speed test, open your Quicktime Control panel. Select the Connection Speed that best matches the results of your speed test. Close the control panel. Log into the DVSS page, find your video and try again.

Q: I’m viewing off-campus. I go through the process of scheduling a video but nothing happens at the scheduled time.
A: Only those videos with a “Play Video” link are available for “off-campus” viewing. Those assets that only have the “Schedule Video” option must be viewed on-campus.

Q: Who should I contact if I have additional questions about DVSS?
A: You can call the TLS office at 419-372-7020.
